Times Square shredders offer good riddance to 2009

NEW YORK — Need to purge bad memories of 2009? Shred them.

All those seeking a fresh start in 2010 are invited to New York City’s Times Square on Monday to slip their unpleasant remembrances through shredders.

New Yorkers and tourists alike can line up to destroy everything from pink slips to photos of old lovers.

A Dumpster and a sledgehammer will be available for unshreddable items.

The third annual Good Riddance Day is organized by the Times Square Alliance and will take place from noon to 1 p.m.

A $250 prize will be awarded for the most creative shredded memory.

At last year’s event, some people shredded scrawled notes that said “the stock market” or “cancer,” while others shredded bank statements and printouts of “Dear John” e-mails.
