Moose tours cemetery, remains loose in Maine
PORTLAND, Maine — A moose remains on the loose in Maine’s largest city after crisscrossing a busy road and running through a college campus and cemetery. The moose was spotted walking through Deering Oaks Pond on Thursday afternoon, then crossing Forest Avenue under the I-295 overpass, and walking into a reedy area near Hannaford supermarket.
Portland police and state game wardens tracked the animal and a state biologist planned to inject it with a tranquilizer but the gun jammed. The moose then ran back across Forest Avenue and through the University of Southern Maine campus, before heading into Evergreen Cemetery off Stevens Ave.
The Portland Press Herald said biologists let the moose go when it ran out the back of a wooded part of the cemetery and was last seen heading toward Westbrook.
